The Xhosa Tribe of South Africa are passionately devoted to tobacco smoking. The pipe is cut from wood and when people are gathered in a group, it is customary to pass a pipe around for everyone to smoke. Each person uses their own mouthpiece, not so much for reasons of hygiene, but to prevent witchcraft. The significance of pipes in Xhosa society may be illustrated by the metaphor used when someone dies - “Wayibeka Inqawa” - “He has laid down his pipe”.
